Browns Around Town: Cameron Erving and Robert Griffin III Surprise Local Football Program

Usually in the days after the draft, the majority of sports websites out there spend their time grading how teams have done and attempt to project how those players will fit with their new teams. While you will obviously get plenty of that coverage this week, we interrupt your regularly scheduled draft reading to share a goodwill story from the Cleveland Browns.

In a video that was shared on North Ridgeville High School football coach Luke Durbin’s Facebook page and Twitter account on Tuesday, it looks the Rangers (I am a proud Ranger alumni) are getting a helmet makeover from the Cleveland Browns and Riddell.

As Durbin explains in the video, North Ridgeville Football has partnered with UnitedHealthcare, University Hospitals, the Cleveland Browns and USA Football to launch the USA Football Heads Up campaign. This is a campaign designed around making the game safer, keeping players safe and to make sure coaches can keep their players playing football—as Durbin discussed in the video. You can learn more about the USA Football Heads Up campaign here.

Durbin explained to his team that they have a couple of surprises, and the first was Cam Erving walking down from the back of the room to show off a check for $25,000 which will be used for brand new football helmets for the team. The second surprise, revealed a “mannequin” so kindly donated by the Cleveland Browns to display their new jerseys and uniforms to the team.

Little did the players know, it was a person and not a mannequin, and it was new Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III. The room erupted into applause when they realized it was RG3 wearing the North Ridgeville uniform and brand new helmets from Riddell.

In a time where player safety is becoming a bigger issue every year, it is great to see so many groups partnering up to make the game safer for the players at the level when they are developing the fundamentals that will help carry them through their careers. If you want to take a closer look at the new North Ridgeville Rangers football helmets, there’s a bigger picture of it below.
